MATTHEW FAHEY, MD
Matthew Fahey, MD, President of the Travel and Immunization Clinic of Portland, finished his residency in Emergency Medicine at University of Oklahoma in 1992. He has been working as an Emergency Medical Physician in and around the Portland area since then. In 1997 he co-founded Pacific International Maritime Medical Service, a company providing maritime and occupational medicine. Dr. Fahey has been providing part-time travel consultations at the Travel and Immunization Clinic of Portland since its opening in 2003. He enjoys working with his patients and their unique and diverse travel plans. He is an experienced traveler and has been to many countries throughout Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
DAVID SHUBIN, RN, BSN
David Shubin is the Chief Executive Officer of the Travel and Immunization Clinic of Portland. He graduated with a BSN from Linfield College in 1995 serving as the college’s president. Since then he has been working as a Registered Nurse and specializing in critical care and neonatal care. Mr. Shubin has been providing occupational health including air ambulance transportation to maritime patients since 1997. David is an experienced world traveler and has been providing travel health consultations to patients since 2003. David enjoys working with the challenges of families, expatriates and the unique needs of clients who find themselves traveling abroad.
BRIAN BATTALIA, MD
As Medical Director of the Travel and Immunization Clinic of Portland, Brian Battalia, MD brings a long history of experience in travel medicine to the clinic. A medical graduate of Oregon Health Science University, Dr. Battalia trained in Internal Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland finishing his residency in 1988. In 1992 he founded the Legacy Health System Travel Clinic at Good Samaritan Hospital where he worked as the clinic’s director until 2003. He is currently the Ambulatory Care Director for Legacy Health System, and is on the boards of CASA for Children, the Legacy Portland Hospitals Foundation and the American Board of Urgent Care Medicine. Dr. Battalia is very proud of the service and experience the Travel and Immunization Clinic of Portland brings to the community.
KARL WINSTON, PA-C
Karl Winston, PA-C is a Licensed Physician Assistant with a background in Emergency Medicine and Family Practice. He graduated from the UC Davis Family Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant Program in 1997. Karl has extensive experience working with a diverse patient population in primarily urban environments. In addition to educating and providing care to travel patients, he is a case manager and primary care service provider to maritime patients from around the world. Karl has been providing travel consultations since 2006. He enjoys consulting patients who utilize the travel clinic for the prevention of diseases affecting travelers. Karl is a military veteran and he enjoys traveling around the States, Europe, Mexico and the Caribbean with his family.
KAREN SOKOLOW, RN
Karen Sokolow, RN graduated from the Iowa Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1968. She has been a practicing registered nurse for over thirty years. She has completed two years of medical-surgical nursing, 10 years of emergency department medicine, 11 years of urgent care experience, and for the past 11 years, has been practicing travel medicine exclusively. Karen has attended many prestigious conferences including the Montreal International Travel and Immunization Conference, the Vancouver B.C. International Travel Conference, and the University of Washington Travel Medicine Conferences. She has also taken the ONA Childhood Vaccine Administration Course, volunteered in the ONA/Multnomah County Immunization Clinics for five years, and is currently a member of the International Society of Travel Medicine.
JACKIE GUST, RN
Jackie Gust, RN has lived and traveled in over 34 countries around the world. In 1976 Jackie graduated from Good Samaritan School of Nursing. She has 12 years experience working as an emergency department nurse, and 13 years experience working as a disaster response nurse with Northwest Medical Teams International. In addition, she has 12 years experience directing the Travel Medicine Clinic at Good Samaritan Hospital, which she helped establish. Jackie has served in war or natural disaster zones of Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Mozambique, El Salvador, Honduras, Afghanistan, and Iraq. She is the Founder and President of El Sembrador Ministries, a 501 C3 in the state of Oregon, and has worked in Nepal, India, Pakistan, Russia, Central America, and South Africa.
